5FF: MIT’s Online Learning Report, Andy Grove and GAAD

Five Favorite Friday is a curated list of what we enjoyed, noted or thought about in the week just past.

  1. Blog Post: Carl Straumsheim at Inside Higher Ed writes about MIT’s final report on its Online Education Policy Initiative in Love Letter to Blended Learning. The report discusses the need for a new staff position of learning engineer as one of it’s four recommendations. Learning engineers combine the traditional academic degree with knowledge and passion for bleeding-edge technology. The report also makes it clear that “Technology will not replace the unique contributions teachers make to education through their perception, judgment, creativity, expertise, situational awareness and personality, … But it can increase the scale at which they can operate effectively.”.

  3. Book: Andy Grove’s High Output Management.The legendary chairman and CEO of Intel discusses the basics of management. Mr. Grove devotes an entire chapter (Training is the Boss’ Job) to his view of learning and training.
  4. Event: Making sure that the training we create is accessible to all is critical from a moral and legal standpoint. May 19th is Global Accessibility Awareness Day (#GAAD). In this interview Jennison Asuncion explains how GAAD got started. Ready to set up your digital accessibility personal learning network? The folks at Microassist have set up a twitter list of accessibility thought leaders.. You can also search for the hashtag #a11y on twitter.
  5. Learning Website: Elearning Learning is Tony Karrer’s brainchild. The site curates RSS feeds from the best learning and development sites on the web.  It’s the secret weapon in our personal learning network.
