“Lights, Camera, Intro: Getting Started With Video”

ASTD Instructional Design Special Interest Group

Speaker Dale Van Blokland

Position: Instructional Designer and eLearning Developer
Company: City of Austin
Are you interested in incorporating video in your eLearning but not sure where to start? Are you confused by aspect ratios, formats and frame rates? What type of camera should you use?  Dale’s presentation will answer these questions as well as address the following:

•              How important is lighting in producing video?
•              How does a green screen shoot impact your final product?
•              What tools can you use for editing video?
•              How do you balance file size with quality?
•              What is the best way to use your video in effective communication?

Dale will also show you how he has incorporated video in his resume, all wrapped up in a PDF file.  Whether you’re an instructional designer, project manager or trainer, Dale’s resume technique may be exactly what you’re looking for in 2011 to craft your “stand-out-from-the-crowd” resume.

Success in an Accessible E-Learning Environment, Part II: Hands On Workshop

Creating engaging E-Learning is tough. Many of us spend hours contemplating issues such as cognitive load, brain-based learning, and other lofty instructional design strategies. Go cognitive accessibility!

But when it comes to creating E-Learning materials, most designers are given minimal (if any) instruction on how to create an accessible technical template or how to test for accessibility.

In this workshop, you will:
  • Discuss accessibility testing strategies
  • Build a Visual Design Plan for HTML templates
  • Build an Accessible Navigation Plan for HTML templates
  • Build an Accessible Navigation Plan with tool restrictions for HTML templates

Success in an Accessible E-Learning Environment, Part I: Policy and Theory

Recently there has been a renewed interest in making our E-Learning environments accessible for people who are blind, have low vision, are part of the deaf community, have mobility considerations, or have cognitive learning needs.

Part of this renewed interest stems from pending changes to the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Section 508 refresh…but it also comes from the needs of our maturing workforce. Many people can benefit from the same techniques used in making materials “accessible.”

This introductory review includes some of the latest policies and theories on E-Learning accessibility.

Topics covered include:
  • “Universal Design” versus “Instructional Design”
  • Critical points to alert or inform learners
Speaker:  Hiram Kuykendall, CTO, MicroAssist
Location:

St. David’s Episcopal Church Campus
